Commitment Phobe

Apr 15, 2021

Ever see similarities between how you relate with your partner and your parents? You know that saying about how we’re attracted to someone that reminds us of our mom or dad?

Regardless of the kind of relationship you had with your parents, our relationship  with our parents or caregivers shapes a big part of our identity and how we relate to others, especially in the ways we tried to please them. The aspects of ourselves that we suppressed to please our parents are mostly what we don’t allow ourselves to share with our partners.

In our conversation today, my guest and close friend Julian Castro talks about his journey becoming more comfortable with intimacy and how he realized his relationship with his mom and the expectation she had of him growing up affected his romantic relationships. Julian talks about his journey towards being comfortable being vulnerable with his family, friends and partners ,and how the freedom to be himself and overcome fears of rejection and abandonment played a big role.

Some of the topics we cover today are:

* What fear of intimacy looks like not just in a relationship but with friends and family.

* How Julian realized that the “nice guy syndrome” and pressure to please women sabotaged his ability to be intimate with others.

* -The power of choosing your singlehood and facing loneliness vs saying yes to any partnership to fix loneliness.

* How Julian overcomes his fears of rejection and judgement every time he shares his art with the world.

* The very common sources of sexual shame among men that nobody talks about.

* How speaking your truth and talking about the “taboo” increases intimacy in relationships.

* Masculine and feminine dynamics in relationships.
